Explorers I

Explorers I is a beginning music exploratory program, Explorers I is designed for kindergarten and first grade students. This class focuses on the fundamentals of music—ear training, healthy singing, intonation, reading music, singing in parts, beat-keeping, *Solfege, rhythm reading, focus, concentration, and improvisation. Explorers I is an active learning environment, engaging students’ motor, oral, aural, and cognitive skills. Instruction is active and game-oriented. This is a non-auditioned, non-performing group.

Explorers I is moving to a new earlier time and will gain a new instructor this fall! SVCC is delighted to announce that Maggie Hagy will join Joy Anderson in teaching Explorers classes this year. Mrs. Hagy has completed Level I Kodály training, which focuses on Explorers-aged children, and is the music teacher at Keister Elementary in Harrisonburg. She comes to SVCC having taught high school choral music with great success for several years, and is thrilled to return to her first love, teaching elementary students.

Two separate classes of Explorers I will be offered, if enrollment numbers allow, running on ten consecutive Monday evenings beginning September 18:  Group A, co-taught by Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Hagy, from 4:30-5:10pm; Group B, taught by Mrs. Hagy, from 5:30-6:10pm (offered only if numbers are sufficient).  Both classes will continue in the winter semester starting January 8.

*Solfege is a technique for the teaching of sight-singing in which each note of the score is sung to a special syllable, called a solfege syllable. Each solfege syllable has a handsign that goes with it. These handsigns add physical and visual cues to what’s going on in your ear and voice.

Instructors: Joy Anderson & Maggie Hagy

Explorers tuition is $130 per semester.  To register, download the Explorers Registration Form, complete and mail it to:  SVCC, 1200 Park Road, Harrisonburg, VA 22802.  Checks should be made payable to EMU.
